Newborn
screening is a state-based public health system that is essential for
preventing the devastating consequences of a number of medical conditions
not clinically recognizable at birth. All babies born in the U.S. receive
newborn screening.

Why do babies need newborn screening?
•
Most babies are healthy when they are born.
• All babies are tested because some babies look healthy but
have a rare health problem.
• If found early, serious problems like mental retardation or
death can be prevented.
