Newborn Screening and Krabbe Disease

Currently, the United States does not have a Universal Newborn Screening Program. Therefore, there is an inequity of diseases screened at birth from state to state.

How Many Diseases Does Your State Screen For?

Interesting Facts About Newborn Screening

  • Six babies are born every day in the US alone that have disorders detectable through newborn screening, but go undetected because they aren't screened.
  • Newborn screening can detect more than 40 disorders, and that number continues to grow.
  • Most disorders detectable through newborn screening can be treated by diet restrictions.
  • It is estimated that each year 12,000 U.S. infants born with treatable diseases go untreated. Over 3,000 die.
