09/01/04 - JIM KELLY TO START 2.4K RACE FOR HUNTER’S HOPE

Pro Football Hall of Famer will begin the 5th Annual Southtowns Family Fun Race & Picnic on September 25th

Orchard Park, NY - We hope not just Southtowners, but all of WNY will join Jim Kelly and Hunter’s Hope at the 5th Annual Southtowns Family Fun Race & Picnic on September 25, 2004 at the Orchard Park Train Depot. The race, which was begun in 2000 by the Southtowns Financial Group, has accumulated over $40,000 for various charities, including Hunter’s Hope. This year, all funds raised will go to Hunter’s Hope to help find a cure for Krabbe Disease and other leukodystrophies.

The race, which is a USTF Sanctioned Course (NY01039AM), will begin behind the Orchard Park library at the cross streets of South Buffalo and West Highland, at 11:00 AM. Registration is at 9:30 AM. Immediately following the race, there will be a picnic at the Train Depot with food, music, and entertainment for the whole family. The picnic is free to runners and walkers of the race; non-participants are invited, but will be asked for a donation to attend.

Partner Sponsors for this event include: Smart Pill Diagnostics, Southtowns Financial Group, Inc., Adflex and Cello Pak.

Jim Kelly, the former Buffalo Bill, established the Hunter’s Hope Foundation in 1997 along with his wife, Jill, after their infant son, Hunter, was diagnosed with Krabbe Leukodystrophy, an inherited, fatal, nervous system disease. The Foundation is the Kelly’s life long commitment to increase public awareness of leukodystrophies as well as to increase the likelihood of early detection and treatment. Their ultimate goal is to raise money to fund research efforts to identify new treatments, therapies, and a cure for Krabbe and other leukodystrophies. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $3.8 million to leukodystrophy and related neurological disease research.
